At our Owl training they showed us that writing your initial with a squirt bottle of mustard on the outside of the foil will help ID your hobo dinner, and it turns dark brown when done.

We tried this at home because we want to have hobo dinners on
our upcoming trip. The foil and wet paper towel set up
helped, wonderfully, to keep the food from burning. I, also,
liked breaking up the ground beef (easier to eat on a cook
out) We still used cream of mushroom soup like we remember
from cooking this when we were in boy scouts. I added sliced
avocado to mine once I opened it up. Yummy! I highly
recommend trying at home to get the techniques down before
attempting it in the great outdoors.

I like slices of pineapple in my hobo dinner. It tastes and smells
wonderful. That way you get a hot desert too!

Thanks for the wet towel tip! Genius! I imagine it makes
handling the packets easier too. Our problem is always
flipping without tearing.
Hey I bet this would be amazing with some canned baked beans in it too!

I was a Boy Scout some 50 years ago.As I
scanned the recipes,I barely remember
any of them in detail but there was one
recipe named Hamburger La Foil. It was
quite simple to prepare. It consisted of
a hamburger patty, a potato, and some
onion slices, salt and pepper. We wrapped
it in aluminum foil and tossed on
campfire coals until done. It had an
amazing aroma for something so plain and
simple. I had never forgotten this
personal favorite of mine. I still make
and enjoy this recipe except one minor
detail. I cook it in the oven and still
it takes me back 50 years in Camp
Evergreen. It is one of my fondest
memories.

I came across this page searching to see
if a recipe that was in my Boy Scout
Handbook 50 years ago was somehow still
in the handbook of today. I enjoyed the
page and read the comments. It made for
me a wonderful day that allowed me to
roll the tape back of 50 some years. It
bought back smiles from the fond
memories of my time as a Boy Scout. I
want to thank all involved in putting
the wonderful page together.

Is there a healthy replacement to
using aluminum foil?

When we were married, my husband told me about a hamburger meal he would
make while on camping trips with Boy Scouts. I gave it the name Boy Scout
Special. On a piece of foil I layer sliced potatoes, sliced carrots, a slice of
onion and a hamburger on top. I wrap the foil around the layers and fold the foil
edges to seal. We cook the foil packages until an inserted meat thermometer
shows the meat is cooked.
This has been a favorite dinner in our family for almost 50 years.
