The BSA merit badge program includes over 120 different areas of knowledge and skills. As soon as a scout joins a troop, he can start earning merit badges. The only limitations are his ambition and availability of adult merit badge counselors.

Merit Badge Pamphlets: Each BSA merit badge has an official pamphlet which contains requirements, introductory information and supplemental references. Scouts can purchase pamphlets from a scout shop or find them in their troop library. Pamphlets are updated every few years, so be sure to get the most recent copy.
Merit Badge Counselors: Volunteers are selected, trained, and approved by council or district committees to teach scouts about specific merit badges. They are knowledgeable in the topic and understand the goals of scouting and the merit badge program.
Merit Badge Process: When a scout decides to earn a merit badge, he first obtains approval to begin from his Scoutmaster. The Scoutmaster provides the scout with names of appropriate BSA merit badge counselors. The scout finds a buddy (preferably another scout) to be his partner for all meetings with the merit badge counselor to follow safe scouting guidelines. He then contacts the counselor to start working on the badge. The counselor reviews the requirements with the scout and they decide on projects and a schedule. Expertise, advice, and guidance as needed is offered by the counselor to the scout. The counselor certifies completion of requirements and the merit badge is presented at a troop meeting.
Required Merit Badges: A scout can earn merit badges as soon as he joins a troop, but merit badges are not required for advancement until Star rank. Star, Life, and Eagle ranks are reached by performing service, demonstrating responsibility, and completing merit badges. Eagle rank requires completion of at least 21 BSA merit badges.

 Jul 07, 2012 - Troop 69
our troop is going to start the Cooking MB after summer camp.  The MB talks about the Food Pyramid, but the USDA no longer uses that, and it has been changed to My Plate.  It can be found on line at
We want to teach the MB right, but we want to be up to date also.  What do you think we should do?

Troop 69 - A scout should complete the current requirements for a merit badge.  The merit badge counselor can certainly offer additional information based on his/her experience as long as the counselor doesn't require the scouts do other than the badge's requirements.
If I was the counselor, I'd mention the newer 'food plate' when reviewing his work for requirement #2.
Also, the Cooking merit badge is due to be updated by the end of the year.  If that happens, I expect it will reflect current government programs.

Hi- I'm the Scoutmaster of Troop 501, Durango Co.  I would like to see Beekeeping brought back for a number of reason, not the least of which is the shocking decline of commercially kept honey bees.  I am not alone in thinking that small scall hobby beekeeping will be the only savior of honey bees in this country.  It has been estimated that the human race would starve without the pollenation of honey bees, and Boy Scouts should be leading the way as usual.

While updates are being done, the "railroading" MB book has these points: the upper picture on page 17 should be labeled as a "centerbeam flatcar", per CSX's site; the Railroad classifications on page 25 & 26 need to be updated, including Class 2 & 3;  Section   "Safety First", starting on page 34 need to include discussion and sample sign, on zones labeled on of several ways that the train does not sound its horn. Questions via email invited.

does the eagle merit badge changes impact me if i started scouting before the changes are made because i don't think so i think i use the handbook i started with but just wanted to make sure so i can get stated  if needed
Jul 18, 2013 - Yukon Jack
@ Tim.  The BSA allows all scouts to finisht eh rank they are currently working on under a former system of rules/regulations/requirements.  If you were a Life Scout when the changes became official (i.e. the rank you were currently working on was Eagle) then yes, you may use the requirements you are used to.  If you were a Star Scout or lower when the changes were implemented, then you use the older requirements to finish whatever rank you were currently working on, but all higher ranks (including Eagle) must use the new requirements.  Good luck.
Jun 02, 2014 - Brendan
I just registered as a merit badge counselor for the first time and am wondering if any more experienced have suggestions?  I know I have the technical knowledge of the badges, and I've done some work with Cubs, but not yet with the older boys.  I know they need blue cards and assume they're supposed to get those from a Scout Master before meeting with me and I know I'll turn them away (until later) if they show up without a buddy.  Beyond that, what do I need to know?  Thanks!
Jun 02, 2014 - Scouter Paul
@Brendan - That's super!  See this BSA page that has links to more info. And, this BSA page that has a "Merit Badges" section.
