The Tune:
Lyrics:
Over hill, over dale
As we hit the dusty trail,
And the Caissons go rolling along.
In and out, hear them shout,
Counter march and right about,
And the Caissons go rolling along.
Then it's hi! hi! hee!
In the field artillery,
Shout out your numbers loud and strong,
For where'er you go,
You will always know
That the Caissons go rolling along.
In the storm, in the night,
Action left or action right
See those Caissons go rolling along
Limber front, limber rear,
Prepare to mount your cannoneer
And those Caissons go rolling along.
Then it's hi! hi! hee!
In the field artillery,
Shout out your numbers loud and strong,
For where'er you go,
You will always know
That the Caissons go rolling along.
Was it high, was it low,
Where the heck did that one go?
As those Caissons go rolling along
Was it left, was it right,
Now we won't get home tonight
And those Caissons go rolling along.
Then it's hi! hi! hee!
In the field artillery,
Shout out your numbers loud and strong,
For where'er you go,
You will always know
That the Caissons go rolling along.
That the Caissons go rolling along.
That the Caissons go rolling along.
The Army Goes Rolling Along
March along, sing our song, with the Army of the free
Count the brave, count the true, who have fought to victory
We're the Army and proud of our name
We're the Army and proudly proclaim
First to fight for the right,
And to build the Nation's might,
And The Army Goes Rolling Along
Proud of all we have done,
Fighting till the battle's won,
And the Army Goes Rolling Along.
Then it's Hi! Hi! Hey!
The Army's on its way.
Count off the cadence loud and strong (TWO! THREE!)
For where e'er we go,
You will always know
That The Army Goes Rolling Along.
Valley Forge, Custer's ranks,
San Juan Hill and Patton's tanks,
And the Army went rolling along
Minute men, from the start,
Always fighting from the heart,
And the Army keeps rolling along.
Then it's Hi! Hi! Hey!
The Army's on its way.
Count off the cadence loud and strong (TWO! THREE!)
For where e'er we go,
You will always know
That The Army Goes Rolling Along.
Men in rags, men who froze,
Still that Army met its foes,
And the Army went rolling along.
Faith in God, then we're right,
And we'll fight with all our might,
As the Army keeps rolling along.
Then it's Hi! Hi! Hey!
The Army's on its way.

The caisson siping was the song for the US army during
WWII. The song has been completely changed for the army.
I guess there are no more caissons! Can't imagine
Using it for Boy Scouts.

Great hiking song. I have many fond
memories as a Scout, singing this song
back packing aND hiking. My time as a
Scout was 1964 through 1971. From Cub
Scouts through Boy Scouts to Explorers.

During World War One, my father fought in France in the field artillery. When I was a child,
he sometimes sang When the Caissons Go Rolling Along. It meant a lot to him, so it also did
to me. Seventy years later I sometimes can't remember what I did that morning, but I keep
this sone in my mind and heart. My father sang a very slightly different version from the
one shown here, and perhaps it has changed over time, but the tune is the same, and I
remember every word of it. My father and his song are forever in my heart. .

This is a wonderful page. Thank you for having it.

Ms Thomas is correct about the caisson song dating to World War One— caissons were the two-
wheeled carts used by the Army Artillery to carry the artillery shells. They were most frequently
pulled by horses; occasionally by soldiers.

My pop spent 32 years in the Army and we traveled a lot...and my mom
taught us every single military song there was at the time whenever we
were driving to a new assignement.......in the USA or Europe...and this
one was one of my favorites......but the words changed!! That tugged at
my heartstrings a bit!

I remember my dad singing that song he was in the Army during WWII he was shot and awarded
the Bronze Star and Purplr Heart, and when I was in in 1967 we sang that song almost every time
we marched

Glad to see this song. It's part
of military along with others.
It's appropriate for Boy Scouts
to sing these songs out of
respect for the military.
When I was a kid in the 60s, we
sang a lot of military songs and
were proud to know them
including Irving Berlin songs. I
had forgotten these kyrics and
happy to see them.
I just lost my Mom who was
stationed in Tokyo during the
Korean War. She was in the First
Cavalry Unit.

It is very appropriate for children to learn this and all the other
service songs! I just visited the WW II museum in NOLA and sang
the army song for my younger daughter. She was surprised and
tickled I knew it all. She didn't know all the words but knew to
which branch it belonged. All Americans should know, at least,
the chorus to these songs. It encourages pride in those who
fought for our country and freedom here and abroad!
