Would the #1 requirement be satisfied in part by attendance of a formal dance performance
like the Nutcracker?
Sep 26, 2016 - Scouter Paul
@Christina - This is the Theater merit badge, not Dancing, so
attending a ballet would not fulfill a requirement.
Sep 28, 2018 - Katie
Ballets are theater. They are not a unconnected grouping of dances. They are a full length
theatrical performance telling a story.
Sep 28, 2018 - Scouter Paul
@Katie - Requirement #1 specifically mentions a "play", as does #2
and #3. If you interpret a dance performance to be a "play", and
you are the merit badge counselor for Theater, then scouts using
you could fulfill the requirements through dance performances.
Dec 03, 2019 - Aidan
For the first requirement, could I use a musical?
Dec 03, 2019 - Scouter Paul
@Aiden - Requirement #1 specifically mentions a "play", as does #2
and #3. If there is a plot and storyline to follow through the
musical, then there's a good chance the merit badge counselor will
accept it. A concert would most likely not be accepted.

Can I watch a play online instead of watching it in person?
May 24, 2020 - Sophie Dingman
Can you design/model a set for an existing show, or does it have
to be original, like a set for your written play or a skit?
May 24, 2020 - Scouter Paul
@Sophie - it can be for any play or theatrical production.
Jun 24, 2020 - Heather
Has there been any change about watching play online or video
during the pandemic? A lot professional theater in this country
have announced they will not reopen until 2021.
Jun 25, 2020 - Jane
@Heather - No, but requirement #1. says:
"See or read..."
So the requirement can also also completed by reading three full-length plays. If a Scout wants to complete this merit badge right now, this might be the best option.

Does reading a play that you have performed count???
Jul 05, 2020 - Scouter Paul
@Ray - requirement #1 doesn't say anything about performing in a
play that the scout reads. It doesn't matter if the scout read
the play and performed in it, or just read it. The scout only
needs to read the entire plays.
May 15, 2021 - ASM Beth
Since COVID would watching a recorded *stage production* of a play
be acceptable for requirement 1? As long as the stage is visible as
are different sets, etc. it seems like it would be similar enough
to going to the theater that it should be accepted, but wanted to
check. We could probably also watch that and read along with the
play so that would fulfil the reading of a play... but I wanted to
ask. Thank you!
Jul 01, 2021 - Scouter Paul
@Beth - The note for that requirement states "Watching plays on
television, video, or as a movie is not permitted." If the scout reads
three plays, then the requirement is fulfilled and watching it recorded
would not be necessary.

Hi there
I am curious to learn your thoughts on how this merit badge might be
appropriately adjusted to accommodate a scout with an IEP relating to
severe dyslexia and some ADHD. He is actually performing in a play which
is why I thought this might be an interesting badge for him to cover ....
but these requirements have more of an academic focus than a practical
one. I struggle with how to support him in a way that lets him maintain
his independence. I'd love some ideas and insights.

I was thinking something similar of, "hey XXX is in a local play,
maybe he/she should look at getting the Theater MB." only to find
it more academic vs participative. Since there's no Dance MB I
personally think if they saw (or were part of a cast in) a Ballet
it should count but that's up to the Counselor and Scout to
discuss.
If you're looking for an alternate that doesn't seem as intensive
look at the requirements for Music MB. That's open to
instrumental or vocal and may be a good start and the scout moves
up to Theater later on.
Jul 25, 2022 - Isaac Dalton
Dose the 3length play have to be since you
have been a scout?
Aug 01, 2022 - Scouter Paul
@Isaac - Yes, all merit badge requirements are to be fulfilled while a
registered Scouts BSA member.
