We lost the Philmont lottery for four years straight and only got in on the waiting list this year. There are plenty of places beyond Philmont.
I'd hate for Philmont to be a Scout's only high adventure experience.

Wow, Walter! We were on a waiting list one year and everyone was bummed. That doesn't sound so bad now. :-)
But, you're certainly correct about "other places" and it would be a shame for a troop to limit itself to just BSA high adventure bases. The treks the scouts have planned themselves to other wild places have been great experiences, requiring more planning and leadership.

How about a coastal adventure? Kayak the waters that Blackbeard called home, North Carolina's Outer Banks. Visit Pamlico Sea Base @ http://www.pamlicoseabase.org
This is a different kind of adventure that I'm sure the guys would enjoy.

We are also on the waiting list. Hopefully a spot will open up for us, but if not we'll plan something else for '11 and try again for '12.

Same for us - several years in a row of wait-list. We took a Council contingent crew so that guys wouldn't age out and miss out. On the other hand, I can personally recommend Northern Tier. You can also look into the high-adventure base at Camp Sheppard in Washington - want to climb Mt. Rainier? Or do massive mountain biking? Check 'em out!

We didn't get a spot either. Will wait for the waiting list number and might look into the council contingent crew or try again in 12.

We planned and took a trip of 7 days to Glacier Nat'l park in MT. What a wonderful place. You see things that most never see because they never leave the car.

I've heard about a National Waiting List for scouts that want to join other Philmont Treks - anyone heard of this??

Looks like 2010 Treks are available as of
