Scout Rank

Scout Rank

These requirements are effective as of January, 2016. See previous requirements.

The first rank of Boy Scouting can be earned as soon as youths join a troop, especially if they have earned the Arrow of Light as Webelos scouts. This first recognition is earned by applying and memorizing some important scouting basics.

Some troops have Webelos scouts bridge over from the pack to the troop in February at their Cub Scout pack Blue and Gold dinner and then have a court of honor in March or April where they are presented with their Scout rank badge. It is certainly not necessary to wait for a court of honor to present the badge, though. A short, meaningful presentation at the earliest opportunity is best - see a sample New Scout ceremony.

How to Join:

  1. Go to BeAScout.org
  2. Click the 'Boy Scouts' tab.
  3. Enter your zipcode and click the arrow button.
  4. Click on a Troop near you to see its contact info so you can call the Troop or your local Council about joining.
  5. Complete a BSA Youth Application and Health Record and give them to the Scoutmaster of the Troop you choose.

Scout Rank Requirements:
All requirements for the Scout rank must be completed as a member of a troop. If the scout has already completed these requirements as part of the Webelos Scouting Adventure, the scout needs to demonstrate knowledge or skills to the Scoutmaster or other designated leader after joining the troop.
    1. Repeat from memory the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout motto, and Scout slogan. In your own words, explain their meaning.
    2. Explain what Scout spirit is. Describe some ways you have shown Scout spirit by practicing the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout motto, and Scout slogan.
    3. Demonstrate the Boy Scout sign, salute, and handshake. Explain when they should be used.
    4. Describe the First Class Scout badge and tell what each part stands for. Explain the significance of the First Class Scout badge.
    5. Repeat from memory the Outdoor Code. In your own words, explain what the Outdoor Code means to you.
    6. Repeat from memory the Pledge of Allegiance. In your own words, explain its meaning.
  1. After attending at least one Boy Scout troop meeting, do the following:
    1. Describe how the Scouts in the troop provide its leadership.
    2. Describe the four steps of Boy Scout advancement.
    3. Describe the Boy Scout ranks and how they are earned.
    4. Describe what merit badges are and how they are earned.
    1. Explain the patrol method. Describe the types of patrols that are used in your troop.
    2. Become familiar with your patrol name, emblem, flag, and yell. Explain how these items create patrol spirit.
    1. Show how to tie a square knot, two half-hitches, and a taut-line hitch. Explain how each knot is used.
    2. Show the proper care of a rope by learning how to whip and fuse the ends of different kinds of rope.
  2. Demonstrate your knowledge of pocketknife safety.
  3. With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent's Guide and earn the Cyber Chip Award for your grade.
  4. Since joining the troop and while working on Scout rank, participate in a Scoutmaster conference.

Alternate requirements for Scout Rank are available for Scouts with physical or mental disabilities if they meet the criteria listed in Alternate Requirements for Ranks
